All forms of salt therapy (such as salt room, salt chamber, salt inhaler, salt sumutin, Suolapiippu) work with the same principle; breathing dry aerosol that contains salt.

Due to their small size (1-5 µm) salt particles can get to the deepest parts of the lungs and sinuses. There they dissolve into the epithelium-covered mucous membrane of the airways. This stimulates mucus secretion in the respiratory systems, helps get rid of viscous secretions, soothes irritation caused by excessive coughing and cleanses the mucous membranes. The antibacterial properties of salt can also help prevent the onset of various diseases of the airways.
